Frequently Asked Questions

These are commonly asked questions, but have you others...no worries! E-mail us at general@fsucrew.org to have any other questions answered.

Do I need to have rowing experience?

No. It is not necessary to have any prior rowing experience in order to join FSU Crew. As a matter of fact, the majority of our current team had no experience before attending FSU. A good attitude, mental toughness, and willingness to be a team member is all you need!

When are practices? When do they start?

The fall practice for both novice and varsity is Monday and Wednesday afternoon from 5pm-7pm and Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings from 5:45am-8am. Coaches are aware that class schedules were made prior to novices deciding to join FSU Crew and this will be taken into consideration. Practices begin the second week of school for varsity and the following week for novice. Please attend our interest meetings for more info.

Where are practices? Transportation?

Practices are held at Lake Talquin about 20 minutes from campus. During the winter when the weather cools down, we practice off the water at our Erg Room located at Forestmeadows Park. We have carpools to all practices that we will help arrange at the beginning of each semester. If you don't have a car, there is no need to fret!

Are there dues to join?

Yes. Because we are a Sport Club at FSU we receive very little funding from the university. Due to boat entry fees, boat transportation fees, team transportation and lodging, and equipment up keep we have no choice but to require dues from all rowers each semester. These dues vary per semester. For more information, e-mail us! But money should never be the reason not to join. We will work with rowers on an individual basis if dues are an issue.

Where do we race?

We typically attend Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, TN and Fall FIRA (state championships) in Melbourne, FL during the fall semester. The spring semester is a little busier with Mayor's Cup (Tampa, FL), John Hunter (Lake Lanier, GA), FIRA (Sarasota, FL), SIRA (regional championships in Oakridge, TN), and Dad Vail (national championships in Philadelphia, PA. The 2012-2013 race schedule will be announced at our interest meetings for each semester.
